It’s the first morning of our summer RV trip and I’m thinking about permanence. Specifically, about how I could stay for a while at this beautiful FREE spot we found, although there is a 14-day limit. So you could move somewhere else for another 14-days, and then another, and so on. Your house has wheels. And I wondered if that would feel too transient, wandering from place to place every couple of weeks without ever really staying in one spot for long. Even though your actual home would be the same. The place you lay your head each night and do your day-to-day living would remain unchanged, you just wouldn’t get to set up camp in a particular spot for more than a couple of weeks. I actually felt a twinge of gladness that this trip is just for the summer. It’s temporary. And then it dawned on me – so is everything else! EVERYTHING is temporary in this human experience. Even things we label as permanent. Our very existence, our alliances and foes, the pain and the happiness, our homes and jobs and families, our relationships with other humans, our children, our roles in life (even the ones we deem really important such as the role of mother)…they are ALL temporary. We may be able to find that unchanging home within ourselves – the place from which we came and will return – but everything in between is transient. Just like this RV trip. Just like homes classified as “permanent” residences. Just like the things we wish would hurry and pass or the things we wish would last forever. Just like life.
